Bumdra Trek
A short cliff-camp trek above Paro, ending at the Tiger's Nest
Overview
The Bumdra Trek is the ideal short trek for travellers who want a genuine camping night in the mountains without committing to a long expedition. From the Sang Choekhor Buddhist College the trail climbs through village settlements and forests of varied species to Bumdra Monastery — the Cave of a Thousand Prayers — where you camp for the night high above the Paro valley.
The following morning you descend through the forest to Taktshang, the Tiger's Nest Monastery, one of the most sacred sites in the Buddhist world. It is a rare route that packs ridge-top camping, monasteries and Bhutan's most iconic landmark into a short four-day trip, arrival and departure days included.
Trip highlights
- Camp at Bumdra Monastery, the Cave of a Thousand Prayers
- Climb to 4,000 m for a spectacular view of the Himalayan range
- Descend to the Tiger's Nest (Taktshang) from above
- Forests of blue pine and rhododendron the whole way
Day-by-day itinerary
Arrival at Paro
Day 1On your flight to Paro the journey affords spectacular views of the snow-capped Himalaya, including Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. Our representative will receive you at Paro Airport. If you arrive before noon you can start your trip after lunch, visiting the 8th-century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the kingdom. In the evening, explore the town. Overnight in Paro.
Sang Choekhor — Bumdra
Day 2Drive to Sang Choekhor Buddhist College at 2,700 m, where our trek starts. Passing through village settlements and entering forests of varied species, the trail leads us to Choe Choe Tse Lhakhang. After three to four hours of normal trekking we reach Bumdra Monastery, the Cave of a Thousand Prayers; our camp for the night is here. We usually arrive by lunch, and afterwards visit the monastery and climb the mountain at 4,000 m before returning to camp. From the summit, the view of the Himalayan range is spectacular.
Bumdra — Taktshang — Paro
Day 3After breakfast we descend gradually to the valley on a winding trail through forests of pine and rhododendron. After one to two hours we catch a glimpse of the roof of a temple — the legendary Taktshang, the Tiger's Nest Monastery. An hour later we find ourselves at its entrance. Guru Rinpoche, the 8th-century Buddhist saint, is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress to meditate. From the temple the view of the Paro valley is splendid. Descend to Paro and walk freely in the town in the evening. Overnight in a hotel in Paro.
